Replacing standard speakers – step by step

It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

After some time, it turns out that the factory audio system is not at its best. Suddenly you start hearing things you didn’t notice before – muffled sound or noise. Today we will show you how to replace the speakers in your four-wheel drive vehicle as standard

It may come as a surprise to many people that radio and speakers are a relatively new addition to the history of automobiles, and you had to pay a lot for them. There was no question of factory installations – the customer received a car only with a radio installation, which included an antenna and wires needed for a smooth and trouble-free connection of the audio system

Fortunately, those times remained only a part of history books. Nowadays, in the eyes of customers, an audio system is a kind of certainty that can seriously influence the decision to buy a given car. What’s more, the automotive giants (see: Audi) are now working on advanced sound systems that would appeal even more to drivers’ tastes. This is possible by using the expertise of sound engineers.

Nevertheless, in recent years many manufacturers have supplied customers with equipment of, to put it mildly, dubious quality. The height of good-naturedness was the inclusion of a functioning radio and four speakers. This makes many of us decide to undertake a reasonable audio revolution.

Where to start?

Expanding your sound system should start with getting a good quality radio that acts as the “brain” of the entire system. If you already have that behind you, it’s time to get down to the crucial issue of speakers. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not provide very good equipment – we are also talking about cables, which have a huge impact on the quality of the transmitted signal. Without the right connector, the most expensive audio equipment can sound as good as the sound system of your local disco polo band.

Speakers

A stock set of speakers usually offers single-channel equipment that receives all signals sent through the player. When replacing speakers, make sure to buy ones that can play sounds of different frequency types. As a general rule of thumb, due to their physical characteristics, high-pitched tones have the worst dispersion – so they are usually mounted in columns at the front of the vehicle, closest to the driver’s and passenger’s ears

The opposite is true for bass, which can be successfully mounted in the privacy of the trunk, because despite the greater distance, the sound will be well heard by the recipient

There is no rule as to how many speakers your set should contain. It depends only on your individual preferences. In our case we stick to the “less is more” rule.

To replace the speakers, you will need to remove the plastic latch of the car door – that is where you will find everything you need. Once you have unscrewed the various components, make sure to additionally seal the holes and provide the speakers with the necessary stability. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use their full functionality. As we mentioned earlier, there is no good sound system without good wires. To get the most out of your speakers and radio, replace the factory wiring between the radio and speakers with special signal cables that are extremely resistant to all sorts of interference. One meter of good cable costs at least four zlotys.

Further, if you feel that your audio system lacks power, you may be tempted to get an additional amplifier, which, as the name suggests, will amplify the signal. Remember not to overdo the ambition. Too powerful an amplifier can damage your audio equipment and seriously strain your budget.
